Vincent "The Ambassador" Pettway

Vincent Pettway began boxing at the tender age of eight years old.  He had 200 amateur fights of which he won 189.  He had 200 amateur fights of which he won 189.  After compiling such an outstanding record and winning numerous titles, possible opponents either moved up or down in weight to avoid factng Pettway.  "Pettway" as he is affectionately known, also won the Golden Gloves twice and the Region IV Title.  Winning this title gave "Pettway" a chance to compete nationally.  While competing nationally, he won several fights and drew much praise from national coaches.  "Pettway" also received numerous invitation to join their camps.  "Pettway" made it to the semi-finals, where he suffered a broken hand which kept him from competing in the 1984 Olympic Trials.  His dreams of receiving a gold medal were quickly gone.

"Pettway" embarked on a new mission and replaced his dreams of a gold medal with the vision of winning a World Title.  His professional career began in 1985 and he has been lauded as the Highest ranking boxer to come out of Baltimore in over 40 years.  Being known as a talented tough figher he is also been described as an articulate, deeply religious, family oriented man who brought a breath of fresh air to the sometimes shadowy world of professional fighting. 

"Pettway" is widely sought as a celebrity speaker at local schools and private organizations.  A veteran of scores of radion interviews along with appearances on WJZ-TV's "On Time" and "Stan the Fan".  The Baltimore Sun describes him as "Stylish and Exciting.  His last outing at the spacious Pikesville Armory was beyond capacity and drew such notables as Sugar Ray Leonard and Archie Moore.

Highlights of his career:

  1. 1986 won the Southeastern Welterweight Championship
  2. 1991 won the MD State Welterweight Championship
  3. 1992 won the USBA Junior Middleweight Championship
  4. 1993 received IBF/USBA Fighter of the Year
  5. 1994 won the IBF Junior Middle Weight Championship with a 4th round knock-out over Gianfranco Rossi of Italy
  6. Made his first successful defense of IBF World Title with the thrilling knock-out of the year over former 3 time World Champion Simon Brown.  This knock-out is currently in the top 10 knock-outs of all times
  7. Retired record of 45 wins, 6 losses, 1 draw with (32 KO's)
